Florence Starr Taylor Fund for the Visual Arts

Florence Starr Taylor’s passion, and career, was art – from portraits to newspapers, businesses to murals, her talent fueled over 70 years of creativity. Florence graduated from what is now the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, was the first woman reporter and artist for the Lancaster Intelligencer (now LNP), became the first staff artist for PBS, and worked as a portraitist for the USO during WWII.

The Florence Starr Taylor Fund for the Visual Arts serves the needs of local artists and arts organizations while emphasizing the role of arts in building social capital, bridging cultural barriers, and celebrating the rich diversity of Lancaster County.

Since 1991, The Florence Starr Taylor Fund has recognized and encouraged the Lancaster County arts community by funding and nurturing a full range of artistic expressions. These project include:

  • Church World Service’s Community Mural Project: Here, There Is Welcome.
  • Showcasing the skill of artists with disabilities at Friendship Heart Gallery.
  • Creation of neighbor-directed art at Culliton Park with Lancaster Public Art.
  • Art for children at the Hands-on-House.
  • The Black Artist Waystation at YWCA.
  • Brazilian artist Bruno Miguel’s gallery show and talk at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design.

You can find many of Florence Starr Taylor’s works at LancasterHistory, where her memory is being preserved thanks to the donation of her collection by Ron and Virginia Ettelman; and the Lancaster Museum of Art, where several more of her works are on display.
