The word “philanthropy” is not an easy one to understand.  In ancient Greece, “philanthropos” meant "love for mankind."  Today, however, the concept of philanthropy has come to describe the effort to increase the well-being of humankind.  That doesn’t just mean making a contribution to your favorite charity, however.  It’s the effort to make the world a better place, to “pay it forward,” in the words of a recent popular novel and movie.

You don’t need to be named “Bill Gates” or “Warren Buffet” in order to be a philanthropist.  If applied well, your gift of even $10 can make a positive impact.  The role of the Lancaster County Community Foundation is to improve our region's quality of life by increasing charitable giving, connecting donors to community needs they care about, and providing leadership on critical community issues.  We provide several ways that you can participate in this mission and make a difference in the region where you live.
