Fixed Income For Life: Charitable Gift Annuity Program
Did you know that you can support the community you love while also receiving stable income and tax savings?
By donating assets like cash or appreciated securities to fund a charitable gift annuity, you receive income for yourself or you and another-- for life. Best of all, you make a lasting gift to the nonprofit organization or cause of your choice.
Charitable gift annuities are contracts between you and the Community Foundation that provide you with a guaranteed income. When the contract ends, the charitable gift annuity establishes a permanent fund at the Foundation to benefit the causes or organizations you have chosen.
Here’s how it works: Mr. and Mrs. Stoltzfus have lived in Lancaster County all of their lives. They are both in their 70’s and believe strongly in farmland preservation. After discussion with their tax advisor, the Stoltzfus’ establish a $25,000 charitable gift annuity with the Community Foundation. The charitable gift annuity provides a steady stream of annual income at a fixed rate for the rest of their lives. In addition, the Stoltzfus’ receive an immediate charitable tax deduction for their gift and a portion of the annual income is tax-free. After their lifetimes, the balance of the Stoltzfus’ gift establishes a permanent fund at the Foundation that provides for farmland preservation education programs on an ongoing basis – preserving their legacy of caring for county lands.
A charitable gift annuity is less complex than a trust and much easier to establish. “It is a win-win scenario. They’re a great way to support yourself, your loved ones, and your favorite charities at the same time,” says Kim Shorter, Community Foundation VP of Asset Development.
